Out for a Walk

“God is always at home, we are the ones usually out for a walk”                                       Meister Eckhart

Yesterday, I had some time and I took the opportunity to go for a walk.  As I was walking I began to reflect upon what I saw and what I was not seeing.  I saw beautiful houses and garden areas, but I also saw weeds, trash, and blight.  I happened to be walking through areas of my city, and at times found quiet and beauty, and others noise, distraction, and ugliness.  Somethings attracted my attention and others not.  Somethings made me think of God and his beauty, and others not.  I believe my response or lack of response is not unique.  In fact, it is something that we all contend with.

As we journey up the path, there is much for us to notice that goes ignored.  It is not that it is intentional, we just are either too busy, too distracted, or so intent on something else.  As I was walking, that was what was going on in me.  At times I could focus and was intent upon noticing God and his creation.  But then at other times, I was distracted and other things would creep into my mind.  What helped me stay focused and looking for God in things, was praying.  I pray a lot as I walk or run.  It seems to be as natural as breathing for me at those times.

We all can find ways to be more intentional, to take time to smell the roses and to notice God’s presence in our lives.  It is something that we need to work at, it does not come easily.  Take some time today to walk and to notice what is going on around you.  Consider, where God is in all of it. Spend time in prayer and reflect upon what you see. It could be in the face of another, the flowers, or even in the Blight, that God might reveal something important for you to consider.
