When we experience certain events, some good and some tragic, most of us find a way to remind ourselves through time of that particular occurrence. These markers or memorials take many forms. They may be a wedding ring, a picture, diploma, or a headstone. It could be the marks on the door jamb where the heights of our children are marked through time, or the hand prints pressed into clay. We somehow want to be reminded. We don’t want to forget or be forgotten.
My pastor has a signet ring that he wears to remind him, who he serves. He decided to get it after ten years in ministry. I have a tattoo, that reminds me that because of the blood of the Son I have eternity. I have seen many markers and heard the stories associated with each one. There is an importance and significance carried by each one.
In scripture there are many stories and events, many of which that have memorials, and even altars made to commemorate them. They may be a pile of stones, but they tell a story and help us to remember. At the Transfiguration, Peter wanted to build tabernacles for Jesus and the others, somehow he wanted to mark that experience for all time, he did not want to forget. After the resurrection, Thomas saw the scars and marks on Jesus, that helped him be reminded and to believe. We all want and need these reminders.
There is a deep value being given to those events in our lives. The ways in which we mark them, says something about us and our various journeys. Today, take out your scrap book, or listen to that special song. Take time to be reminded of those important events. Consider where you were, who you were with, and where you were with God at that time. Ask the Holy Spirit to help remind you. Take the time to savor them and to sit with them. Perhaps journal as you reflect. However, you chose to open yourself and to be reminded, it will be time well spent.
