All of us have times of trouble in our lives. We wrestle with them, we try to understand whats happening and we question what’s going on. It is during those times that we need a right perspective. No matter the situations that we find ourselves in, it is in God that we should trust.
Daily we place our trust in someone or something. While were driving, we are hoping that the others on the road pay attention to the rules and to everyone else on the road. We trust that their cars are in good working order, and that they are physically capable of being behind the wheel. When we climb into our cars and head out we are automatically trusting. In our various relationships we maintain levels of trust. We trust that people are who they say they are. We trust that they will do as they say or what they have committed to. But when things are risky, troublesome, or when our world is seemingly falling apart, where do we put our trust.
Psalm 46 speaks to us about whom we should place our trust. The Psalmist, shows us where we have refuge. The context of the Psalm is that the Lord delivers Jerusalem from the Assyrians siege, during the reign of Hezekiah. The history of the children of Israel shows how God was with them no matter what danger, no matter what crisis, and no matter what trouble they found themselves in. We experience no less. Perhaps they were more adept at recognizing it, but because of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness God is with us in those times as well.
In the first three verses of the Psalm, even if the impossible happens God is still God and in control. If order changes to disorder, we can still put our trust in the Lord. Verses 4-8 address the fact that God is in control of the nations of the world and all of human affairs. No matter what happens, God is our refuge. The last verses show us where our security is to be placed. In the end the Psalmist tells us in through the use of imperatives, to be still and know that he is God.
When things are beyond us and when we are being besieged by trouble, we need the right perspective. If God is for us who can be against us? If God is for us, we need to hold fast to him. It is easy at times to lose our perspective, we need to be reminded especially when times are tough.
How do you gain perspective when troubles come? How do you hold fast to him?
